You remind me of cancer. Everyone's having a great time, and then BAM! Cancer crashes the party and we all gotta sober up cause we don't want to appear callous or indolent. Well, fortunately at one time.... well, I'm getting ahead of myself. Let's start at the beginning and try and find an ending.

In the fifties, the dress and suit were in vogue. In the sixties nudity was all the rage. The seventies was the time for the original, or classic punk. However, the eighties introduced the punk reform movement, which brought us the finest era of fashion in punk culture. Then the nineties rolled around, the neo punk movement was siezed by wusses wearing clip on nose rings and rub on tattoos, and buttons became religated to cheezie themed restaurants. Something needed to change, not just to awaken the era of the eighties, but the sense of style that had been lost. Enter the oscars...

When watching one oscars award show, one saw aplethera or red ribbon toating stars. Everyone was in support of the ribbon. A year earlier, only one saw fit to wear it, now everyone was wearing one. Later, it came in a color other than red. I think, but can't be certain, the next big wave was pink. While pink remained fashionable for about as long as red, just that it got started later, so it lasted a bit longer. During the hey day of the red ribbon, aside from the pink, a number of other ribbon inspired movements began. For every cause, there was not just one ribbon, but six sub divisions covering the same reason in variation. Why be against something when one could be against that something experianced by one particular group. I'm sure that many of the groups were happy that an entire ideology or cause could be summed up in a chromatic piece of fabric.

But, as always, a new decaded rolled around and the fashion of the previous decade, ribbon included, HAD to be discarded. Some still cling to it, but it had to change in order to remain. Now, no one whear's the ribbon, but puts ribbon stickers on their car or door or notebook. No one in hollywood would be caught dead wearing a red ribbon today, but a few years ago they would've claimed they'd die before taking it off.

That is why I purpose the creation of a new fashion icon to commemorate the ribbon, I call it the personal festoon, or persoon for short. Festoons have been around for a while, but not as a fashion statement (same as ribbon prior to nineties). As such, I feel confident that in a few years, everyone will be wearing persoons on their lapels or in place of broachs to create awareness over the ceasation of ribbons being used as political and ideological vehicles.

As for the punk movement? surprisingly the wuss punk has taken on no new definitions of style. They added a bit of hair highlights, or die, but that was always there, it just disappeared for a while in the nineties.
